From Hospitality to Healing: The Enduring Impact of the Sansone Legacy

Legacies are built on values, compassion, community and a commitment to care for others. Few stories embody these ideals more clearly than that of the Sansone family, whose generosity continues to touch lives across generations through Mercy Health Foundation.

In 1925, Charles Sansone, a respected local businessman, purchased the Colonial Hotel, a prominent landmark located at the southwest corner of St. Louis and Jefferson. Together with his son, David Bunch Sansone, he operated the hotel during an era when Springfield welcomed notable visitors such as President Harry S. Truman, Elvis Presley, and President John F. Kennedy. The Colonial Hotel stood not only as a hub of hospitality, but also as a symbol of the Sansone family's deep roots in the community.

While the Sansones built a legacy in business, their most enduring contribution came through a commitment to caring for others. In his final act of generosity, David Bunch Sansone designated 90% of his estate to support the Sisters of Mercy, St. John's Hospital (now Mercy) and its School of Nursing. In honor of his parents, he established the Charles Sansone and Angelina Sansone Hospital Fund , ensuring their names would forever be associated with healing and hope.

Today, that legacy lives on through the fund's dual mission: to support nursing education and provide assistance for patients facing financial hardship. This thoughtful investment in both caregivers and those they serve reflects a profound understanding of community health-that it depends equally on skilled professionals and accessible care.

The Sansone Fund continues to make a meaningful difference. In fiscal year 2024 alone, more than $20,000 was distributed to help patients with essential needs such as transportation, gas cards, long-term care support, and emergency shelter services. These resources remove barriers to care and provide comfort and dignity during some of life's most difficult moments.

At the same time, the fund strengthens the future of healthcare by supporting nursing students who might otherwise struggle to pursue their education. By investing in the next generation of caregivers, the Sansone legacy ensures that compassionate, high-quality care will remain available for years to come.

The story of the Sansone family is a powerful example of how legacy giving can reflect personal values and create lasting change. Through careful planning and a desire to give back, one family transformed their life's work into a continuing source of healing and support for their community.

At Mercy Health Foundation, we are honored to steward gifts like the Sansone Fund. These legacies remind us that the impact of generosity extends far beyond a lifetime, offering hope, opportunity, and care to countless individuals.

If you are considering how you might create your own legacy, we invite you to explore the possibilities of planned giving. Like the Sansone family, your story can become a lasting source of compassion and care for generations to come.
